Kevin L. Walker saw a problem nobody was solving: mobile barbers needed professional-grade organization and mobility systems, and the products simply didn’t exist. So he built them — and trademarked Barber Backpack®, Barber Bag, and Barber Rig® to pioneer the space.

Finding the Gap First

Mobile and traveling barbers were carrying their tools in whatever they could find — duffel bags, toolboxes, repurposed gear that was never built for the trade. The category they actually needed didn’t exist yet. That gap was the opportunity.

Walker built real products for it — not a concept, but actual physical goods with real customer bases and brand communities around them. Then he did what most first movers forget to do: he trademarked the names. Barber Backpack®, Barber Bag, and Barber Rig® became protected brands, not just products on a shelf.

Pioneering a Category

Being first to a physical-product category means defining the language customers use to search for it. For a time, the brands owned that space, generating six figures in combined revenue and building genuine communities of working barbers who relied on the gear every day.

“First movers win the category,” Walker says. “But in physical products, winning the category and keeping it are two very different games.”

The Lesson That Built Plopjoy

Physical products without defensible margin are vulnerable. Both brands eventually commoditized when overseas manufacturers flooded the category with copies. That lesson is exactly why Walker now builds around services, systems, and expertise — things that can’t be knocked off on an assembly line. It became the foundation of Plopjoy’s entire model.
